Jul. 8th, 2004 04:40 pmWe celebrated the Fourth like good Amurricans by having a cheapo barbeque in the backyard, then went to see the fireworks in Bristol from Colt State Park.
Things are finally getting better. A few days of nonstop work and unpacking, coupled with the urgent need to provide babyproofing from a VERY active 20-month-old, resulted in tears over the past few days. But just give me an hour of unstructured time here and there's nothing I can't do. So the boxes have beaten a retreat to the basement, for the most part.
I'm mowing the lawn and doing yardwork, voluntarily even. Much of the crisis was generated by the need to obtain and construct various pieces of flimsy some-assembly-required furniture (kitchen island, bathroom cabinet -- the last quite amazing. How did the woman live without a medicine cabinet?). We have paid many visits to Home Despot and similar stores.
It's a remarkable thing, what spending enormous amounts of money does to old habits. I mean, we're spending a hundred here, a couple hundred there, and I can barely feel it. Not that it doesn't matter, just that I have stopped caring, almost. "Let's go out for some chocolate frosty milkshakes!" And get a new armoire and bookcase while we're at it. See? It doesn't feel so bad.
I'm also in a state of deferred comprehension because I have set my sights on going wireless. Why, I don't know, since they put the cable jack right in my office and I never use the laptop. But so it shall be. So Phase One was to buy OS X 10.3 and put it on the iMac. Amazingly, it works perfectly. I am totally loving not crashing all the time. And iTunes is as addictive as everyone promised. I mostly stayed away from the downloading-music thing, but this is pretty incredible. It could eventuate in an iPod or something equally useless.
Installation of 10.3 on the laptop, not amazingly, was not successful. The screen got all pink and filled with lines. I thought they might have screwed up the logic board issue, but lo and behold, there were supposed to be discs that came with it that will allow me to upgrade. So they're sending me them. I'm happy about this, even though the stupid battery won't hold a charge.
Also have a couple of MST3Ks coming in the mail, supposedly, so I'm pleased about this as well.
The only one who's not pleased at the moment is Phoebe. She either found a patch of poison ivy in the backyard (it's definitely there) or there are some residual fleas in this house from the woman's cats, because she's scratching and licking herself constantly. It's not a nice thing to see.
Well, pictures of the new manse soon, I promise...
