Don't believe your ears
Aug. 16th, 2004 01:12 pmFor some reason the Mrs. and I were talking about something, and I thought of Barney on the Simpsons sayng "We want chilly willy!" and the magic of the Internet makes it possible to satisfy my momentary curiosity about the context for that statement. And that in turn led to a discussion of the Gabbo episode and a momentary amusement at the "That oughta hold the little SOBs" comment. Which of course I didn't even give much thought to -- I'd actually heard the basis for the joke, when I was a kid.
Except, it turns out, I hadn't. Kind of a bummer.

Date: 2004-08-16 11:52 pm (UTC)i just came across this statement in *another* context: it was what Judge Thayer, the presiding justice of the Sacco and Vanzetti case, was reported to have said to a professor on the Dartmouth campus after his ruling. He said something like, "Did you hear what i did to those anarchist bastards? That oughta' hold the SOBs for a while" In the 20s, this phrasing of "hold" must have been a more common expression. I found this in an interview with Richard Polenberg on the Court TV website.
