it all evens out in the end
Aug. 26th, 2004 11:20 amBefore I left for my trip, Thursday, I spent mostly up in my office. When I came home in the morning I left my keys on the dining room table. The Mrs. saw the baby walking around with them. That evening: no keys. We ransacked the house, and they were not to be found anywhere.
Yesterday morning, I heard a little jingling from upstairs. Came down and the baby was walking around with the keys again.
She's crafty, that one.
--------------------------------------
I had a clever idea for how to fix the iMac OS 9 problem. My iBook has a 9.2.2 install disk. Why not just use that? But the iMac is too clever for that. It says there is a "problem" with my hard disk that prevents this from being possible. (I speculate that the "problem" is that there are already two systems, OS 9.0 and OS X, already on it.)
So the 9.0 to 9.1 updater doesn't mount to disk on either of my Macs, which I think is strong evidence that the problem is on their end, i.e. that the public download is corrupted. After all, how many people update from 9.0 to 9.1 these days? But I will go through the cumbersome step of trying to get the corner Mac store to burn me a CD ROM of the 9.1 updater. Once I do that, if that doesn't work, I'll try to get Mac to send me a disc of their own.
I might also talk myself into getting Word for OS X, since after the tax write-off it's only $75 for an "educator" version. Hmm...
One thing I did do was get a firewire cable and back up all the files from that machine by having it in "terminal" mode. It was so ridiculously easy and good. I can't believe it took so long for me to do that.

We have sacrificed a Goat!

"Yes, there were some software problems with System 6. These are elegantly solved in System 7, and the best part? You won't have to buy all new software to take advantage of the update!"
"System 7 has been a reliable platform for business and home computer users, and System 8 will expand upon that reliability without necessitating the costly software upgrades that affected some people in the switch to System 7."
"System 9! The final frontier. All is well, worship us. Bow down before System 9... Oh yeah, you'll have to buy all new software, but we swear to this Goat we just sacrificed that you will never need to buy new software ag... Oh, I'm sorry, I was just handed this bulletin, you will have to update your software at $150 a pop every single time you use it now. Still these Macs are easy to use, huh? And sooooo much more reliable!"

Date: 2004-08-27 01:38 am (UTC)I have a Dell, it came with work. No, it has no expensive update problems (though already it is wacky to try to use the new version of Outlook without being on XP). It just crashes all the frickin' time. One company made all the software, and it crashes all the time.
You've been baiting me on this for years, but I am not sorry one little bit.
