Yesterday's Airport of Tomorrow
Aug. 8th, 2005 07:35 pmMy flight to Philadelphia was delayed, so they just booked me on a direct flight to Providence. Better, except that it gave me four hours to kill in the Pittsburgh airport. Fortunately I seem to have picked up free Internet here too, so I am Internetting away.
The Pittsburgh airport is sad. They spent a fortune on this huge giveaway for US Airways, since Pittsburgh was their hub at the time. The airport was built around the concept of being an "Air Mall" with normal shops, where the prices would be low enough that in theory people would want to come there even if they weren't traveling. Then came Sept 11, and now no one is allowed beyond the security barriers into the "Air Mall" without a boarding pass. At the same time US Airways began to collapse, so that now Pittsburgh isn't a hub and they have given up tons of gates. The place is like a ghost town, or a white elephant, or choose your own damn metaphor.
There's an exhibit here on airport history called "Yesterday's Airport of Tomorrow." The slogan is plastered all over the airport. Irony? What's that?
Oh I am tired of traveling, yes I am. It is so unbelievably boring, and this has been the worst summer of it I've had yet.
