Jan. 3rd, 2006 10:49 pmPittsburgh: still exists. Still perpetually enshrouded in rain. High point of the trip, other than having dinner with
cellio, was going through the Wabash Tunnel, which I posted about a while ago. I found this neat because a) the tunnel runs under
flw's old neighborhood; b) it is a link to the bizarre history of Skybus; c) no one knows where it is or even that it exists. This is still the case, as there was zero traffic anywhere near the thing (and it requires serious searching to find the approaches to it). So, even for Pittsburgh, the waste of transportation money and effort is really something else. Amusing that PennDOT has a Webcam so you can watch the no-traffic any time of the day.
One other note: never, ever, never, ever, never imagine that the Motel 6 in Piscataway, New Jersey is a suitable place to spend New Year's Eve, or any other moment of your existence. You don't often like to think about the setup of a little man in a bulletproof room giving you your key... until you realize that the man isn't going to come out of there, no matter what. No matter if there are 100 angry, drunk, stoned teenagers whooping it up outside your door until 4 in the morning. It's like, "Oh yeah... that's why it's not worth it! I get it now!"
