I was only halfway done with my various bits of advice for parents-to-be... with advice that although there is a fair amount of tongue-in-cheek kvetching to be endured, there will also be days when you walk around the whole time with a stupid grin that you can't get off your face no matter what. And it's because you get to take home one of these:

Henry William Charap was born on Saturday, March 11, at 6:39 pm. He'll be in the hospital until Wednesday. Long story short, C-section due to concern about complications that turned out not to exist. His mom is doing great too -- about 20 minutes of pure terror beats 8-12 hours of labor at least as far as feeling chipper about the world afterwards. And this gives us more time to adjust -- which we need!

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled LiveJournal...

He's totally gorgeous!

My good friend's baby was born by c-section last year and no one could resist marveling over his perfectly round head. You've got that going on here too. What a very pretty newborn!

Please, enjoy that all-day grin-- I hope it lasts for days and days.

Yeah, they are all into the round head. I don't really remember Jo's head being that flat, but then amnesia caused by sleep deprivation kicks in pretty quickly.

Still grinning, anyway. Thanks!

*dies* What a shayna punim!!!

I would LOVE to come for the bris but I'd have to be back in Cambridge by 2pm sharp, so I'll have to see what I can arrange transport-wise. :-} Will advise.

Thanks! Transport-wise, well, you know the people I sent the announcement to -- maybe you all can get together? I'd certainly hope the ceremony will be done by 12:30 at the absolute latest.

Mazel tov!

Is that a just-barely-on-Shabbat baby or a just-barely-not-on-Shabbat baby? (Not that I can make the bris either way, but I'm just curious.)

An interesting question... I was looking at the clock myself with that question in mind. But it turns out not to matter for the bris, since when there's a C-section the bris doesn't supersede shabbat. So, if he was born on Sunday, the bris would be on Sunday; if on shabbat... bris would still be on Sunday.

But it's a funny thing, that his birth time falls right in the half-hour between when I would end shabbat and my rabbi would end shabbat. So we need to resolve this somehow!

Anyway, thanks!

For the unindoctrinated (me), I just have to know why a C-section birth makes a difference in the calculation.

I am not 100% certain myself but I will take a stab. The commandment to rest on shabbat (by not driving, or causing bleeding, for example), is biblically mandated and very important. But the commandment to circumcise your son on the 8th day is also biblically commanded, and it takes precedence over shabbat. However, the context of the command to circumcise is found in discussions of ritual purity after childbirth where the presumption is that a vaginal delivery has occurred. Somehow the rule was derived, based on the context, that the command to circumcise on the 8th day only took precedence over shabbat when a vaginal delivery has occurred.

I wish I could explain the rationale better, but then again, I didn't know the rule at all until a few weeks ago.

I once heard (waves hands wildly in lieu of a citation) that because the timing of the C-section is under human control in a way that the time of vaginal birth is not, we don't pre-empt Shabbat in that case. No idea where I heard it or if it's true, but maybe this will twig a memory in someone else.

True -- with the C-section the bris isn't affected. Still, though, eventually you'll probably want to know when his Hebrew birthday is. :-)

Congrats and thanks for sending all the pics today!! Can't wait to hear the whole story sometime. And how you decided on his name! Will he have a nickname or always be Henry, I wonder?

I think he looks like you. Though he also looks like he has some of that dark hair I was predicting! He's so cute!

Well, we have started calling him Hen, which isn't a good sign, though we have already gone through so many nicknames for Jo that I've lost count.

He mostly looks like Jo when she was that age. So you know what that means.

Anyway, thanks!

Mazel tov, etc. No Raffi gifts for you, unless you make me angry. Then it'll be a Raffi DVD and a DVD player attached to a huge Plasma TV with an unadjustable volume control preset to LOUD.
