I like that bit at the end -- when I was in Czech many years ago, otherwise very nice people would expound to you at length about their loathing for Gypsies.

I was surprised to find that my otherwise enlightened and socially-progressive girlfriend has a deep antipathy for the Roma.

Yeah, I mentioned to the Czechs that they don't have Gypsies in America and they were like, "oh, what a happy country" and similar comments. They said that it wasn't prejudice because the Roma are dirty and steal. There was anti-Roma graffiti everywhere. It was pretty damn weird.

When I was a teenager I was visiting a family in France. The mother asked me if we had a lot of Arabs where I'm from, and I said the biggest minority group was Mexicans. And she said, "Oh, I'd MUCH rather have Mexicans than ARABS!" And then went off on this anti-Arab rant, which was very odd as she had theretofore seemed very empathetic and progressive.
