He's got his life, got a better life coming...

I put that song ("Jacksonville") on a CD mix earlier this summer because it just seemed so apropos... even if it's really about the Underground Railroad. Actually my feelings were well summed up by Robert Caro's op-ed in the Times yesterday (reg. req'd). Thinking of the mountain that had to be climbed for this moment to happen, it's hard not to tear up, honestly.

Also, anyone who follows politics responded to the words "Sarah Palin" by spitting out their coffee in gleeful surprise.

Lest I start waxing too poetical about the American Dream, I read Nathanael West's A Cool Million yesterday, in about an hour. Talk about an acid-tipped pen. I need a re-up on fiction, too, so I'm scrounging for my copy of Miss Lonelyhearts. If I write, I will write like that.

I got to be accused and I got to respond. Life is good.

Tonight: tomato basil soup and Laura. Tomorrow: shabbat. Yes, I know what I wrote.

Looks like the Republicans have caught the Identity Politics bug and they are betting on older white women abandoning the Democrats. republicans are experts at making people vote against their own interests. I am usually optimistic, but I have no hope for this election. I think young people are going to do the same thing they do every election: smoke pot and play video games. I think black people are going to have a little bump in turnout, but in the end will stay home for the most part ("They'll never let us have it :( boo hoo"). And I think white people are going to say they voted for Obama, but the week before the election, the rumor mill is going to kick into overdrive (Obama's going to institute a reparation tax... Obama is going to give Florida to... them, etc...) and white people will find every reason in the world to not vote for Obama... elitist, inexperienced, too much of a maverick, etc...

I just love how people want irrational things. They want a maverick with loads of Government experience.

"Let me get this straight, you want a funny serious drama comedy that's set in a gritty realistic world swarming with magic robots?"

Exactly!

Um, what?

There have been a lot of moments so far this year where everything you're saying has happened and will probably happen again. All the same, this was a good week.

I meant I was optimistic when Gore and Kerry were running.
