Sep. 22nd, 2008 09:02 amSo I finally got tired of reading spectacular reviews for Netherland and decided to see if it was in the library. Of course it turned out to be checked out with a waiting list everywhere. But there was a new button underneath the checked-out versions: "electronic version." After downloading a new Adobe reader, I now have the book on my desktop for two weeks. I deem this pretty terrific (though I'd still rather have the actual book). And the book is indeed pretty terrific as well, so far. Also in progress: A Prayer for Owen Meany. (I know, how have I not read this already.) And I read The Inferno for fun.
Movies: heavy on noir and French art flicks: Dead Reckoning, Libeled Lady, Fallen Angel, Elevator to the Gallows (this last finally inspired me to improve my woeful lack of knowledge of jazz by getting some Miles Davis for my birfday), Band of Outsiders, Sweet and Lowdown.
Music: The referenced Miles Davis is The Birth of Cool. From 1949, which is just about right for me. I.e., I can make sense of it and it sounds nothing at all like a random assortment of bleeps and honks. Jazz is something that Smart People like and I can figure it out, right? Also: the new Beck (kind of hit or miss).
I'll probably add other things to this as I remember them.
