I have about a million things to try to do today and cannot make myself do any of them... Key among these things is taking the car to get inspected. It just kind of occurred to me as we were driving home last night. "Hm, we've lived here for a year. Wonder if our registration...?" At the rest stop got out and saw, yeah, it's overdue by a month. Cops take that kind of thing seriously... good idea not to get pulled over.

Our flee to Maine was not so bad. Of course nothing happened to Boston over the weekend, but Mrs. Sanpaku was already on edge and I was just saying to her, "don't worry, nothing will happen" when the radio report came on that the attorney general had called the mayor to say there was a reason for "heightened concern" in the Boston area, and that was it. Basically the terrorists apparently would have used 9/22 as a backup date if 9/11 had failed. Unfortunately, and to my mind incredibly irresponsibly, the mayor and the media told us about the "concern" and then left us to reason for ourselves what the hell that meant. So of course panic was the response. No one went to downtown Boston this weekend.

The mayor tried to backtrack by saying there was no "new credible information" of a threat. Oh, we don't know anything-- that makes me feel so much safer!! On Friday evening I was listening to a Boston station that played excerpts from the Mayor's speech side by side with excerpts from the mayor from Jaws. "As you can see, the beaches are open and everyone is having a wonderful time." Yeesh.

Anyway, Maine was fine and uneventful. I was a little bored at the end. It is hard to be away from email these days, when I am constantly hoping that new job will be in the inbox. Turns out the place I did the editing test for really did like it fine and assigned me to freelance edit a journal, which is cool but only the smallest monetary start in terms of finding enough money to keep going. I got a proofreading test from another place that asks me to know about things like ems and foul proofs and ligatures and kerning. I somehow thought that computers made all that stuff irrelevant. Josh gave me a handbook for proofreaders before I left Baltimore, and thank God, because it has everything I will need to know, but man this thing will take a long time to do. Anyway I have that and about a million other job related things to try to do today. I can't believe how little time to goof off I have had since I lost my job.
