Thank God the Onion is still out there. They are as funny as ever without trivializing what happened. Everything they have this week is right on the mark. The best is their "On TV tonight" feature (always great)...
Animal Planet: "Sharks: Terrorists of the Sea"
NBC: "America on the Verge of Flying Off the Handle" followed by "America's Time of Trial: Who Fucking Wants Some? You? Do You? How 'Bout You?"
CBS: "Dan Rather Seriously Loses His Shit"
MTV: "Yo! MTV extends its condolences"
Public Access: "Extremely Uninformed Debate"

A very complicated week, between Yom Kippur and preparing for Yom Kippur (lots of cooking for break-the-fast) and now cooking again for tonight. I have had a really terrible time sleeping every night this week, so I am completely exhausted. Wednesday night it was because I ate a lot of pasta before the fast too quickly and had indigestion. Last night it was eating too much from the break-the-fast (but who can turn away from rows and rows of bagels with cream cheese and lox). I used to have my insomnia more or less under control once I figured out that it was primarily a function of eating badly in the evening, but since getting laid off it's been a vicious cycle with the 3 things that cause insomnia: evening caffeine, eating something spicy or fried or insubstantial, and mid-day naps because I'm so exhausted. I think that going to work before just kept me in a permanent state of exhaustion so that I at least got the solid 7 hours at night.

As for the holiday, there's nothing like fasting for 25 hours to make you contemplate your mortality and general lack of accomplishment in life... well it's not as though I want some cheesy life-affirming "message" from my religion, but this year it was hard not to feel like things are spiraling ever downward and that I have no clue as to how to get out of the tailspin.

Tonight's menu, in honor of Adam coming over, is an Indian feast... something I haven't tried in several years, mostly because it takes hours and hours to cook:
Pappadums (from a packet, first time, we'll see)
Chana Dal (yellow lentils)
Mixed Veg. Curry
Some poori or chapatis if I feel like trying to make them... hard with an electric stove
Phirni (rice pudding)
Gulab Jamuns, maybe
And some masala chai to top it off

The chana dal is always really hard to make because you want the lentils to be really tender, but not have the whole dish be dried out, which is what has happened the previous 2 or 3 times I have made it.

During the fast, I was fantasizing about... cilantro. Weird.

I still have that god damn proofreading test sitting around. I have to figure out things like the following printer's instruction: "Text type 10/14 Primer x 22 picas 31 lines to full page" or "Chapter Title (CT): Typositor De Roos Roman, all caps. 1/8" cap height, letterspaceed 1 1/2 points for even color. Indent 4 picas and sink baseline 7 1/2 picas from trim." In other words, I have no fucking clue. It's all in the Chicago Manual of Style or something (wish I'd been smart enough to steal it from my job) and I can look it up, but what a pain in the ass. The pay will be shite anyway so maybe it is not worth it. Then again, what else do I have to spend my time on these days...
