Overemployed?
Oct. 31st, 2001 08:27 pmWell, somehow, without really any effort on my part, I am working full time again. My college friend K., who lives in New York and has pursued a lucrative career in internet consulting despite only finishing 2 years in college, had said something to me weeks ago about looking in to me doing editing work or something with one of his clients. He called me up 2 nights ago and described a project to copyedit online reviews of things, and said that he was going to try to hook me up with it. (His comment on my travails: "Filling out applications-- that's your problem. No one gets a job by filling out applications.")
So there you go. 23 bucks an hour (more than I made at my last job) to insert serial commas into short things that are not that badly written to begin with. And I don't have to leave my house. This should last until Thanksgiving, maybe. At that pay rate I am really really really hoping he finds more stuff like that. New York wages to pay Boston rents works nicely for me!
Fatigue is setting in, however. I didn't expect anything this soon and so I actually have two huge projects due early next week-- copyediting that sociology journal and a big proofreading assignment. So I am way overextended. Yesterday and today have been devoted to staring at the computer all day. This new thing, in particular, requires me to edit things online, and I only have one phone line for a 56k modem, so that is tied up all day. Mostly, though, it's exhaustion. He wanted me to put in 8 hours a day, and between academic teaching applications and those other assignments, it is suddenly like living in a permanent all-nighter. Mrs. Sanpaku is dispatching herself to Long Island for the weekend. Well, it never rains, but it pours.
