Time Capsule
Feb. 17th, 2002 05:19 pmMy dad has an unerring knack for picking the wrong technology. For example, he held off on a CD player for a long time because he thought that DAT was going to be the next big thing. He also got us a Beta in about 1985. After that mistake, I needed a VCR at grad school, so I inherited the Beta. I taped a whole bunch of MST3Ks. Then, just about the same time that Mrs. S. and I got our first VHS, in 1998 or so, the Beta stopped working. I forget why.
So I got the DVD of "The Wild World of Batwoman" and I thought how strange it was that Rhino's catalogue of MST3Ks mostly has ones that are not that good. Besides Pod People, Manos, and Cave Dwellers, they don't have many of the really great episodes: Time of the Apes, Village of the Giants, Laserblast, City Limits, Warrior of the Lost World. I guess it's because I think the '80s ones are actually the best ones, but Rhino is more interested in "retro" stuff from the '50s and '60s, yet those are really not as interesting by and large. (Red Zone Cuba?)
Anyway, so I decided to take out the Beta and see what was wrong with it, with the thought that maybe I would take it apart or something. No one will fix it, so I figured I would have nothing to lose. This is a strange phenomenon, that has has happened to me before: I plugged it in, and the darn thing works fine now! So I recovered all those tapes. I am transferring them to VHS as we speak. So this is good.

We spent today with my in-laws at the Chinese New Year celebration in Chinatown. Firecrackers are loud. The sky is grey. I notice these things. Anyway, it was fun.
Getting along with mother-in-law, who is staying here tonight. Father-in-law attempted to engage me in a charming dialogue over the rightness of Pat Buchanan yesterday, though. Mrs. Sanpaku dislikes when I write about her parents on LJ, so I guess that will have to do. Except to say that you probably could not find a lot of people who dislike ole Pat more than I do, so it was uncomfortable, to say the least.
