sanpaku_backupWhy am I writing this? Because the pile of papers refuses to get smaller. Well, actually, it is down to three. But I can barely force myself to finish them. My hand hurts and is covered in ink. I have circled words and put a question mark above them, leaving students to ponder their own shortcomings without providing real guidance. I have resisted, and failed, the urge to act as an English teacher by correcting the abuse of italics and quotation marks. I have written the same condescending-yet-inscrutably-wise advice and the letter "B" on innumerable papers. There are all too few papers that have a capital "A" on them, a fact I ascribe to my own incompetence. Mostly, by now I am heartily sick of an assignment that once seemed fresh and interesting. Everything has gone according to plan.
