May. 12th, 2002 02:29 amSo we went to the Luna show at the Paradise on Thurs. night. Pretty good.
When I told Mr. Steen that we were going, he pointed out: "You know, they have a chick now. She's good. She's cute, too." All true, and the best thing in the show is that now they can perform "Bonnie and Clyde" again, which they did as their last song, and it was fanfuckingtastic. Really just blew you away. That's probably the song that hooked me on them, so I was very happy to discover that, and it made the whole evening.
Anyway, that was the highlight. They started off kind of slow, and although Dean seems to like that club, they had a hard time hitting the kind of surround-sound effect I got the last time I saw them, in Baltimore. They started with "Weird and Woozy," which is my favorite from the new album, but a lot of their first songs felt kind of stiff and low-key.
Things seemed to pick up when they started playing those songs where all of them are playing flat-out -- really clicked for "four thousand days," which is definitely the best song from the last album and one of my favorites in their whole set. Crowd perked up for many of the songs from Penthouse -- they played almost all of them in the course of the night, so they must know when the band really hit its stride musically. You know, I think that album sold a lot fewer copies than Bewitched, but it's so clearly the album of theirs with staying power (though most of the crowd faves from Bewitched were also played). Conversely, I don't think they played a single song from Pup Tent, even though a lot of those sound pretty good live. Lots from the new album, some of which were good ("1995"), some were not ("Mermaid Eyes," "Renee Is Crying," etc.).
Anyway, once they clicked, they were really great as always. I was a bit worried about the Mrs. and standing in a stinky smoky club for an hour and a half a 11 at night, but she loved it too.
Overall, I wonder what's in store for them. I think there was a sense that Days was (as Frank said to me) their "return to form," especially the first 6 songs on that album, which are great. This one has some very nice moments -- I know I have been craving the chord changes on "Weird and Woozy" for a looong time -- but overall it's not really growing on me. Then again, even Pup Tent grew on me over time, because once you start hearing the things they do in the solos, you forget about the occasionally corny riffs they might use in the rest of a song. This album is like that one in that their best moments are where they go into creepy, almost unnerving minor chord changes, and their worst ones are where they verge into easy listening.
Whatever. I don't really know much about music terminology so there's nothing to distinguish myself as a "critic" of their music, ie I don't really know what they're doing. It's just weird becuase I realize that I know them about as well as I know any musical style out there. So those are my impressions as an unabashed fan, etc.
I wonder if this is the last show I will ever go to, all the more so as it is the first I've been to in at least four years (and what do you know, that one was Luna also).
