Pittsburgh

Return to the house I was born in, which will soon not be mine anymore. Not much to do here except throw out every scrap of my childhood/adulthood. Threw out all my college notes and papers last night. Today was old magazines, including Postscript. (Sorry, Librarygrrl. Hey, we drove by your house.) It is especially depressing as I no longer have much memory of what it was like to be me ten years ago. I feel like I am looking through someone else's stuff.

Especially boring to be here as we no longer have anyone to visit. And the Fort Pitt Bridge is closed, ending any ambition to see the city. Nothing beats Pittsburgh traffic during rush hour, and that's when the bridge is open.

Went with the Mrs. to Bird Park as part of the fake nostalgia tour. This was the park that was raped by the Republicans to build a soccer field. Typical Mount Lebanon.

Came home and my parents are listening to Barry Manilow. Mrs. says: "It's like, manipulative." My response: "I think the word you're looking for is CRAP. Now imagine having this burned into your head between the ages of nine and fourteen."

You know, there's always the Liberty Tubes...

Postscript! The one with the crappy blue photocopied cover, or nice glossy saddle-stitched one? I did that crap in college too. By the end there I was getting pretty good at it.

My 'rents live in Peters Twp now, so I threw out bags and bags of stuff about 7 years ago. Though lucky for me, no artifact of my life before the age of 14 survuved the wrath of my evil mother. And I don't have anybody to visit there either. Going back to the 'burgh for father's day this year. My favorite part of any visit home is seeing the latest chapter in the rapid descent of my grandfather into the pit of Alzheimers. I know this isn't helping so I'll just stop now...

Oh yeah...you could always stop in at the library and check out the current crop of myopic but sexy teenagers shelving books and chasing magazines. Go in and ask for an old issue of LIFE. They'll totally love it.

Liberty Tubes are apparently a nightmare from hell with all that extra traffic, as you can well imagine. The plan for today was to go to the biscotti factory in the Strip, but I don't know if that will materialize.

I think I had both Postscripts but I saved the one with the blue cover, as it has Frank's koan about the desert tribesmen. I didn't see too much of your stuff in the earlier one either. Though it's not like I can really bear to read it, as it contains my own horrific adolescent writing.

You threw out POSTSCRIPTS?

Man, I could never do that.

Know whatcha mean about having no one left to visit in Pgh. I've got one close pal left out there, and she's due to move out here in August.

This is depressing. I love Pgh. But not enough to only visit my parents.

*sniff*

Hey, can you drive past my old house and see if it hasn't been blown up yet? Can you take a picture? I had my life disintegrate around me, so I don't really miss the artifacts.

I can drive by and see if he's out there wandering around or something. I know about you and the artifacts. I'm just a pack rat and I never had to get rid of that stuff, so... I shouldn't have held on to them either.

I highly recommend that you and the Mrs. come to this Friday's May Queen Festival. How long are you in town? I have a radical Mama agenda every night this week, but can find time to visit if need be...

(I live near where Frank Lloyd Wrong lived in his Unibomber shack, just off 51...)

Wah, we don't go out on Friday night... the whole driving thing.

I don't know where the shack was. You talking about Mt. Oliver?

Yes, Mt. Oliver. Well, how much longer are you in town? We can figure something out, I'm sure...

We're here till Sunday AM.

Does mama@mamarama.net work to continue this? Or should I try mamarama@livejournal.com?
