So, yeah, I feel guilty about not keeping up here. I will do better just as soon as the dead weight of my current copy editing lifts.

Also, we are in Maine. It is hard enough to do real work here. It's like being in vacation, but not on vacation. All the same, if one can't leave the house, it is nice to be in a nice house to begin with.

Anyway, the news is good. The Board is set to offer me a full time job in July, and I am very happy and relieved. The second I got the word I went out and bought me an iBook, which turned out to be a smart move, because yet AGAIN the video board on the old machine crapped out at the shop (apparently a defective part), necessitating yet ANOTHER week of delays getting it back. But also a good move because I have wanted, indeed needed, a portable computer for a very long time. And I love this machine! It weighs less than five pounds and has yet to system-crash once.

Maine is Maine, which is to say, entirely lovely. The rambling Victorian "cottage" we live in, courtesy of Mrs. Sanpaku's family, is nestled in the trees on a peninsula opposite Bar Harbor, so the sea is very close. A hummingbird came several times when I was sitting outside today. I eat blueberry jam on toast and the world's best smoked salmon on crackers for breakfast every day. Tea and ginger cookies around 9 every night. Corn chowder and biscuits for dinner tonight. It is not that we could not do these things at home, but somehow we only do them here, and they seem especially fine.

The only radio stations we get are classical and 1940s. The latter is on most times, lending a somewhat odd ambience to the whole place. The other night, with "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen" on in the other room while I worked in my pajamas and slippers, I felt myself slowly becoming Jack Nicholson in the last shot of The Shining...

So, yeah. Things are about as good as they get right now. And you don't really want to hear about that, do you?

Congrats

Congratulation on your new job! Send me the details (via email.)

BTW, Maine's radio choice is so poor because the state is full of geezers!

Also, railroad related:

enough with the guilt already!

A 1940's radio station? That sounds so perfect!
