Most post-ironic summer EVER
Jul. 26th, 2002 10:02 amMy mother-in-law was here for a few days and we finally got her to watch probably the worst film of all time, "Manos": The Hands of Fate. We figured that, as a child of the sixties, she would appreciate it. I think it scarred her deeply. Me, I have the awful music stuck in my head. A constant blaring of clarinets, rollicking pianos, and Shirley Bassey-esque singing.
Anyway, to fit in with our post-ironic summer (1940s radio stations in Maine and now in Providence), we are going to meet my family at the Nevele for a weekend. This is a Catskills resort that I went to with my parents when I was in 9th grade and also between high school and college. Each time was for a week, and honestly I was kind of bored, but the place really impressed itself on my brain.
It's a neat complex of buildings to explore; it exudes a kind of overwhelming 1960s architectural world of funky angles and curves. It has an indoor pool called the "Waikiki Lounge." Its nightclub is held in the "Stardust Room." They have a theme song. It is classy kitsch at its best. So this is the sort of thing better appreciated at this point in my life. My folks are there at an Elderhostel, so that should be fun. I have wanted to go there for years, so I'm really excited.
