I am coming to dread good weather on Fridays. I have a phone meeting at 10 am on Fridays. Last week I came close to getting in trouble because I forgot something that was in my email. Normally this would not be a problem because I do work etc. on the computer while the meeting drones on about metrics and servers and things that have nothing to do with me. But my office is on the side of the house where they put in the deck, and now the workmen are reshingling the whole thing. Worse than the crackle of power tools is the blasting of this horrible country music, which is to say, ANY country music.

One time the Mrs. and I were sitting in what had been our favorite Baltimore pizza place. Had been before they decided to change the restaurant's music system to an all country radio station. This 20-minute long song (well, it seemed that way) had a refrain that we both could swear ran:

She thinks my BALLS're SEXAY...

Only after repeated assaults from this same song in different locales did I realize the word was "TRACTOR's". One incomprehensible word right there encapsulating the evil that is country music.

The terrifying thing is when you hear friends of yours saying things like, "You know, I've been listening to a lot of country music lately and it's really not that bad. In fact I kind of like it." Then you know to slowly back away from them and never discuss music with them again.

Anyway, this god damn meeting is about to start and I have a ton of mindless button-pushing work I could do instead of staring at the telephone during the meeting.

Are you talking about modern Nashville Top-40 crap? Of course you hate it, it's as bad as any pop music. What about Hank Williams, Gram Parsons, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris? Have you heard Dolly Parton's last few albums? You're passing on a lot of great musicianship and songwriting if you judge all country music by what they play on the radio.

Passing on or pissing on?

I was only judging what was being blasted at me. Still, I have not heard any country music I have ever cared for aside from the occasional Johnny Cash. I am sure that somewhere theoretically there is good country music, just as I am willing to concede that in theory there are Republicans with a social conscience. Jonathan Richman did a country album, so I suppose there could potentially be something to it. Potentially.

OK, I'm too harsh. But I am allowed to vent in my journal, I think. Also, you are the last person I would expect to rag on me for the sin of overgeneralization! Pot, kettle, black!
