Got off the phone with the insurance. Very hard to know what is going to happen. The woman was initially reassuring ("oh yes, of course, it's the last thing on your mind") but then talked to the phone with the medical management office and they told her that the hospital called in with the information "late" so we're going to have to wait until claims are submitted to see whether "they" feel like assessing the penalty because there is supposed to be a call with any hospital admission. If there is a penalty she said to call back and that there's also a process for appeal in which you write out the details of things... but the bottom line is that I think this will go on for months before I know what they are going to do. (Prolonged torture, in other words.) I know it is only money and I have a lot else to be profoundly grateful and thankful for, but, you know, $5,000 is a LOT of money.

Talk about hitting the earth with a thud.
