I have a very simple computer need right now. I need a gadget that will allow both my iMac and my iBook to be plugged into the cable modem at once. Such a gadget is called a "router." But I have no idea about how to solve the problem beyond that. You look for "routers" you find stuff having to do with servers and shit like that.

Anyone know about any of this?

Get a wireless router. I know you can buy the deal to make this happen for a PC for $199 at Target. Probably you have to go somewhere special for a Mac. Anyway, the wireless router adds another firewall, plus you can surf the web in the bathroom if you want.

(And someday I will follow my own advice here. about the wifi, not about the bathroom...)

On Mac the WiFi jobbie is called an Airport. When I bought my laptop they were like, "get the iBook with Airport card for only an extra $50!" I thought, "what possible reason could I have for that? I won't care about using the laptop remotely." Oh well.

So I'd have to get an Airport base station and an Airport card installed and that would all be probably like 300 bucks. I am talking about something that I can get for 50 bucks and put an extra wire into. I mean, I don't even need the laptop and the iMac to be on the Web at the same time. I just need to be able to plug the laptop into the cable modem without the cable modem freaking out, which is what happens now, because the IP address is specific to this machine...

The WiFi thing looks pretty interesting, if I could ever figure out what exactly it is supposed to do.

Anyway, do you know anything about non-wireless routers?

I think that's actually the exact jobbie that I need. Thanks!
