We drove down to Riverhead for an overnight dog-dropping-off expedition. The phrase "a three-hour tour..." is coming to mind. Why I didn't look at the weather before we left, I'll never know. I guess I figured that all of that stuff would stay to the south... but it looks like a "historic snowstorm" out here too.

I felt bad about suggesting that we try to make it out on one of the evening's last ferries, the idea being that perhaps we could leave tomorrow morning. Now they're calling for 35-mph winds and exceptionally high tides, so I doubt there will be any ferries tomorrow, even if we could get out ahead of the blizzard. Which we can't.

There is no real reason to leave. I mean, it would be good to get back home so I could work on Tuesday morning, but they'll probably cut me slack if I'm late. (Though the way they're talking, I wonder if even Tuesday is a given.) The cat should be OK, and I don't really have anything concrete to worry about. In fact, truth be told, there is probably not anything specific that I would do down there that I can't do here (aside from having another change of clothes). I just have a very strong home compass. I don't like being gone from the house -- any house -- for that long, and I'm internally resistant to changes in plans. Plus I can't help thinking it would be a lot more fun to watch all of this in front of our fireplace.

[livejournal.com profile] flw really picked the winter to leave the Northeast. I mean, I honestly can't remember a winter with as much snow and cold as this one. If this keeps up I'm going to have to follow [livejournal.com profile] librarygrrl's lead and learn cross-country skiing.

East Coast white out.

Dude, it seems like every time a fellow Pittsburgher moves out west, the East Coast responds with an insane winter. About 4 months after I made the move in August '95, I remember watching TV news footage of ice floes floating down the Allegheny River.

There's a lot I hate about SoCal, but once you've lived with perfect weather, it's REAL hard to go back, man...

If you can walk, you can ski. It is great to get out in it, and besides, aren't xc skis standard issue to new englanders? Go to a ski swap and get yourself some gear. Used are fine too. It will be the best $100 you spend all year.

I'm sure that will ensure that the rest of the winter is 40 degrees and rainy (which is how the last two winters mostly were). I've never heard of a "ski swap." But I'll keep it in mind for the future. It's really flat around here and there are about four parks within a mile of our house!

I should also mention that I've been skiing exactly twice in my life, that I can remember, and the last time was 13 years ago, so...

I went on a ski trip to seven springs in the 8th grade. It was scarring in so many ways that I try not to think about it...
