Is "Calm Before the Storm" too obvious?
Feb. 16th, 2003 09:59 pmWe drove down to Riverhead for an overnight dog-dropping-off expedition. The phrase "a three-hour tour..." is coming to mind. Why I didn't look at the weather before we left, I'll never know. I guess I figured that all of that stuff would stay to the south... but it looks like a "historic snowstorm" out here too.
I felt bad about suggesting that we try to make it out on one of the evening's last ferries, the idea being that perhaps we could leave tomorrow morning. Now they're calling for 35-mph winds and exceptionally high tides, so I doubt there will be any ferries tomorrow, even if we could get out ahead of the blizzard. Which we can't.
There is no real reason to leave. I mean, it would be good to get back home so I could work on Tuesday morning, but they'll probably cut me slack if I'm late. (Though the way they're talking, I wonder if even Tuesday is a given.) The cat should be OK, and I don't really have anything concrete to worry about. In fact, truth be told, there is probably not anything specific that I would do down there that I can't do here (aside from having another change of clothes). I just have a very strong home compass. I don't like being gone from the house -- any house -- for that long, and I'm internally resistant to changes in plans. Plus I can't help thinking it would be a lot more fun to watch all of this in front of our fireplace.
flw really picked the winter to leave the Northeast. I mean, I honestly can't remember a winter with as much snow and cold as this one. If this keeps up I'm going to have to follow
librarygrrl's lead and learn cross-country skiing.
