Right now my mother-in-law and Mrs. Sanpaku are looking at an apartment in a building across the street. My in-laws have been talking for years about moving out of Long Island, and they read the apartment ads for our neighborhood a lot.

Hmmm. Potential pluses: babysitter, dogsitter, housesitter always nearby. Minuses: my in-laws living across the street from us. So, there you go.

In all seriousness, I guess I get along with them fairly well these days. Also, my years of knowing them are filled with vague discussions of things that are planned to happen yet somehow never quite end up taking place. For one thing, my in-laws have no health insurance and, so far as we can tell, no retirement plan or anything, and since my father-in-law reports on Long Island news, I can't begin to imagine what he would do for a living up here. So this is something that is unlikely to happen.

The miniature train station came last week. It consists of ten million intricately laser-cut pieces of very thin wood. The first instruction, as with all good model building, is to paint them with an airbrush. So right away the first step is to go out and spend a lot of money on an airbrush, compressor, filter, etc. (or at least cans of compressed air for the airbrush). That's something else that won't be happening any time soon, not with our spending this month on Phoebe's million-dollar mouth. I hope this doesn't turn into one of those projects that never gets done. We have enough of those lying around the house as it is.

Today was the second Monday in a row that I went to shul as the morning minyan guy, and Steve was the only other guy there. Kind of discouraging. It is going to be hard to make myself learn the Torah readings if no one ever shows up to hear them. On the other hand, I at least guarantee myself one time a week when I do not feel like complaining about some aspect of the service. There are a number of things they do that are the "custom of the congregation" but don't make any logical sense. If I speak out about them I risk being labeled as "the looney guy," even more so than I already am.

So far 4.5 out of 6 rooms are cleaned for passover, and tonight will be the big push to finish up. I feel pretty good about that. For all the craziness of this time of year, when it finally comes together, it's a nice feeling.
