Apr. 28th, 2003 09:41 pmMy mother-in-law's surgery went smoothly this morning, so that's good. Mrs. S. has been over at the hospital for most of today. I finally talked to her just after she had some kind of fight with her sister. It's been more nerve-wracking than I think they want to admit.
My day's been pretty placid. I missed out on all the nice weather trying fitfully to accomplish work things... long, interminable project hanging over my head that has vague due dates and that largely consists of noodging people for dribs and drabs of text. Not a lot of work, but just enough to keep me from feeling like I've accomplished anything at the end of the day.
After updating yesterday I took the dog on a walk by the Pawtuxet River. This is truly amazing... it is about two minutes from my house, no joke: you walk away from the road about 30 feet and suddenly you are in the midst of deep, unspoiled marshland along a very quiet river. It just goes on and on through little tidal ponds and reeds. The highlight at the end was seeing the season's first bunny. We absolutely have to go there every single non-raining day that we are here.
Spent a lot of yesterday night making "aliyah cards" for the shul; these are... well, I'm not going to bother describing them. Maybe I will put them online for the 1.5 of you who might be interested. It involved laminating, blue card stock, and scissors, so I was happy.
Tonight after work I finally got to check out the Castle Cinema Cafe. This is a restored movie theater where you can get table service while you watch the film. The seats are all made out of Lincoln Town Car seats -- something about them being unusable when limos are decommissioned. Anyway, they were comfy and I enjoyed watching The Quiet American. (I'm bummed that A Mighty Wind isn't playing in Providence yet.) One minus: the acoustics in there were terrible, and it was hard to hear the film. But I think I will be back, once we find a babysitter again.
One last thought: for some reason, I mean I have absolutely no reason, for most of today I have had stuck in my head that cheesy "rock" music from Touch of Evil. You know, that really banal, repetitive music that the gang types pipe into Janet Leigh's hotel room? It is creeping me out.
